ROMEO AND JULIET
SHAKESPEARE
YALE SCHOOL OF DRAMA 2013

Director Cole Lewis saw Shakespeare's play as about a society obsessed with wealth and appearances; where aggression and murder were around every corner. The love between Romeo and Juliet is totally alien in this - beautiful, fragile and impossible. Our world was inspired by the cold, hard beauty of luxury lofts, contemporary art galleries and modernist interiors. All of the props in the show were gold and glass. Romeo climbed up the crack in the wall to get to Juliet on the balcony above, and when she died the crack illuminated with blinding light from behind.
