Inspired by the famous mad scene in Donizetti’s Lucia Di Lammermoor, Director Louisa Proske concieved of this production as the fever dream of a patient in a mental institution, hearing the opera on a radio in her room. Performing at the Theater of St Clemens, in a converted church, We bisected the playing space diagonally with a sheer curtain. The small orchestra was on the front of the curtain, surrounded by a landscape of dirt, filled with mysterious half-buried silver objects and furniture, used to play the scenes. Behind the curtain was a representation of our protagonists hospital room. At a pivotal moment - the beginning of the mad scene - Lucia ecstatically pulled the sheer curtain back, mixing the world of the mental hospital and the imagined world of the opera. Soprano Jamilyn Manning-White was a powerhouse as the title character, enthusiastically thowing herself into the role.
