Jiréh Breon Holder’s new family play takes place in a wealthy suburban black neighborhood in Atlanta. This upscale area of Atlanta has a architectural vernacular that includes idiosyncratic details such as soaring two story living rooms and entryways, interior second story “bridges” between areas, and a mix of Southern American, English and French influences. The character who owns the house in question is a collector of black contemporary art; and the interiors are an eclectic mix of masculine midcentury, traditional and folk-inspired pieces. Although most scenes take place inside the same home, two scenes take place outside of it. We decided to play these two scenes simply on the apron; using sheer curtains to communicate being outside the home, while allowing the home to be omnipresent in the background. For the scene taking place directly outside the house, the curtain used is printed with an image of the blueprint of the facade of the house. Since the front door of the house was integral to the scene, a front door unit tracks on. For the funeral eulogy scene, a simple black sheer curtain is used. An automated slipstage pulled the furniture back 4’ so the curtains could close.
